The NORTHERN LIGHTS WIND QUINTET was formed at the RSAMD in 2009 and comprises winners of major RSAMD prizes including the ‘Governors’ Woodwind Recital Prize’ and the ‘Classical Concerto Competition’. As a group they have recently won the ‘Governors’ Recital Prize for Chamber’ Music and were awarded the ‘Mary D. Adams Prize’.

The group currently receive coaching from John Cushing (RSNO) and singularly receive lessons with other leading players from Scotland’s major orchestras. They have taken part in masterclasses with artists such as Lorna McGhee and have been coached by RSAMD Head of Woodwind, Heather Nicoll.

Northern Lights have staged many successful performances within the RSAMD but are also committed to a professional future and taking their music to a wider audience. Recent engagements include a recital in the ‘Edinburgh Festival’ and a showcase on BBC Radio Scotland’s ‘Classics Unwrapped’ programme hosted by Jamie MacDougall. The near future includes a recital at Glasgow City Halls and a world premier of a new quintet by Birtwhistle.
